Protection against hepatitis A, a liver infection spread through contaminated food and water in many parts of the world.

Book a travel vaccination appointment

Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver. It is passed on through food or water contaminated by an infected person, and through close contact. In much of the world it is common, and travellers who eat out, stay with local families or travel off the usual routes are at higher risk.

The vaccine

A single injection gives protection for about a year. A second dose six to twelve months later extends that to twenty-five years or more, so if you travel regularly it is well worth completing the course.

When to have it

Ideally at least two weeks before you travel, though it still gives useful protection if given closer to departure.

Side effects

Most people have nothing more than a sore arm for a day or two. Mild tiredness or a headache can happen and passes quickly.

Your pharmacist will confirm at your consultation whether this vaccine is recommended for your trip.
