Pre-travel protection against rabies, carried by dogs, bats and other animals in many countries.

Book a travel vaccination appointment

Rabies is a viral infection passed on through the saliva of an infected animal, usually a dog, bat or monkey. It is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but is entirely preventable with prompt treatment. It occurs in many countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas.

The vaccine

A course of three injections before travel. If you are then bitten or scratched, you still need urgent medical treatment, but it is simpler and quicker, and does not depend on finding rabies immunoglobulin, which can be hard to get abroad.

When to have it

Start at least four weeks before you travel so the course is complete in time.

After any bite or scratch

Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for several minutes and seek medical help straight away, wherever you are and whether or not you have been vaccinated.

Your pharmacist will confirm at your consultation whether this vaccine is recommended for your trip.
